Jewellery Making
The technique of jewellery making is explained
through projects encompassing many varied
procedures including piercing saw work, filing,
soldering and polishing. A speciality of the
studio is Skerries Sea Glass setting, pick your
own glass from the beach and learn to set it
into beautiful jewellery.
Silversmithing
Using similar techniques to jewellery making,
the silversmith also uses a range of hammers
and stakes to create three dimensional objects
from a flat sheet of silver.
Starting with a template, the sheet silver is cut
out using a piercing saw, the edges are filed
smooth and the shaping begins. Silver is
worked at room temperature although with
repeated hammering becomes work hardened.
To keep the metal malleable, the silver is
annealed, a process of heating the sheet to a
cherry red colour using the gas torches at the
hearth.
All these techniques and more are taught to the
students to enable them to create a stunning
piece to take home and be proud of.
A hallmarking service is available through the
Dublin Assay Office.
